Jean Dubuffet Paper Sculpture
We continued learning about 3-D art and working on 3-D art projects. This week, the 7 years old students (6 or 5 internationally) learned about the french artist, Jean Dubuffet. They looked at slides of his work and even saw some videos of him working. Then, we got started on our homage to Jean Dubuffet. Students got a big piece of paper A2 size and free hand drew 4-5 Dubuffet inspired shapes. They were scared and hesitant to go big, which I find happens a lot with younger artists.
Once they were done with their organic shapes, I checked them to make sure they were all big enough and then they got the clear to trace them with black markers and draw lines inside their big shapes. Those lines would help guide them as they draw their patterns inside. Students used red and blue to color and draw inside their shapes. I reminded them that it is okay to leave some white space.
Once they were done coloring, we cut them out, cut out two small lines on each side and I helped them assemble the pieces together into a standing sculpture.
I have done this project in the past and I learned that big is better! I did it with a normal A4 sized paper and the sculptures did not turn out as exciting as these big ones did.
I was inspired to do this lesson by this post:http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2011/12/jean-dubuffet.html
