Mark Jenkins Boot

The theme for January (2019) was 3-D art. Students learned to tell the difference between 2-D art and 3-D art. I showed them a Styrofoam sphere and a drawing of a circle on a paper. I asked students to feel the paper with their eyes closed (they didn't know I had drawn a circle on the paper) and I asked them to touch the sphere which was inside a bag. I asked students if they knew what was in the paper and they said, "No." I asked them if they knew what was in the bag and they said, "Yes!". I asked them to explain the difference and they said  they could feel the shape of the sphere and they didn't feel anything on the paper. This is how I taught them what is flat and what has different shapes.

For our first project, students learned about Mark Jenkins and his amazing sculptures. We talked about what they thought the sculptures were made out of. The students loved the statues even though they were kind of confused by them at first. They got very excited when I told them we would be making our own Mark Jenkins inspired boots.
The 6 year old students (7 years old in Korean age) first wrapped a layer of tape sticking out around their friend's leg. I helped them get started to make sure they could see how to stick the tape together. I also made sure they weren't pulling the tape too hard so it would be easier, and less painful, to cut out the boot when we were done. They wrapped with the tape all the way up to the knee. Next, I gave them clear wrap to carefully wrap around the tape and tap to make sure it is sticking. Next, their final layer was tape wrapped around the clear wrap they had to make it sturdier and finalize it.

Once students finished, I carefully cut a straight line from the knee to the foot. I wanted to cut it to make sure nobody got cut or cut clothes. Once I finished cutting, students taped the cut part together with tape. They loved this! If they were older and we had more time, I would aim for wrapping more parts of the body so their sculpture can be bigger.
