Fine Motor Skills Kite
The two to three first months with the 4 years old students, and some of them are still 3, are rough! For some of them, it is their first experience in a school environment and they have no idea what is going on and what they have to do. Also, they can barely control their bodies and hold pencils so it is very hard to work with them.
During these months, I like to work on very simple activities that require repetition and simple steps. I like to work on projects that will help them get the confidence and practice they need to develop their motor skills for future projects.
One of the projects I like to work on is these fine motor skills kites. Students need to cut the kite shape from the paper, this can take a while because some of them still don't know how to use scissors and I have to teach them. Next, I draw with them to show them how I want them to draw lines one by one all the way from one edge to the next, they also need to color inside the lines for another of the spaces in the kite. We practiced drawing small circles to control hand movement. Next, I gave them small stickers to put on the kite. It sounds simple, but many of them struggle controlling their fingers to get the small stickers off and sticking them on the paper. For the final part, I tied a yarn piece and showed them how to put beads in. Students loved this part and there was complete silence in the classroom. This part was hard or incredibly easy for students but they all enjoyed it.
