Korean Traditional Art with Ink
For the month of February 2019, I wanted students to learn a little bit about traditional Korean art. We looked at slides of Korean ink art and talked about the imagery. The 4 and 5 years old students worked on a flower. The 4 years old worked on a traditional flower painting and the 5 years old worked on a mandala flower.
Since the flowers are hard for them to draw, students traced prints using carbon paper. Once done, students used toothpicks to trace with ink. I used toothpicks to control the thickness of their lines and it also makes them work slower so they can take better care of their line work.
Once the students were done tracing with ink, they painted their flowers with watercolors.
Students enjoyed looking at images they recognized and talking about them. Many of them were excited when they saw a picture they had seen around Seoul. I heard many of them exclaim, "I have that in my home." I think is a great way of ending the school year (my school end in February) with a taste of home.
