Woven Spider Web

The theme for October was Halloween! The second year students ( Korean age 6, international age 4-5)  worked on another Halloween project (the other project they worked on was this)  and learned about basics of weaving and made a spider web by weaving yarn.
We made our loom by coloring and sticking popsicle sticks together (I hot glued them for faster results). Once we all had our looms ready, I tied yarn on each student's loom, reviewed our simple pattern with them and let them work alone. Many students were able to remember the "over and under" pattern I chanted with them as they moved their yarn over and under popsicle sticks.
Once they finished weaving the yarn, I tied the yarn leaving a long string they could use to hang up their spider web. Students worked on drawing and coloring a spider on paper. Once they cut it and finished their spider, I glued it to their web.

This lesson was an absolute hit. At the end of the year, I asked students what were some of their favorite projects we worked on and this one was mentioned by a lot of students. It was a great activity for students to practice a different set of motor skills.

One of the homeroom teachers hung up student's spiders and they looked so cute together.
