Korean Mandala

The theme for February is traditional Korean art. I think it is important to teach my students something about their heritage and country since they are all Korean and we spent a full year learning about artists from other parts of the world. Students always respond positively and excited when they realize we will be talking about Korea. The third year students learn about the traditional Korean tiger paintings and the second year students learn about flower paintings and first year students learn about mandalas.

I like to introduce my students to different materials and techniques we can use to make art. For this project students learn how to use carbon paper and they works with indian ink. Since my students are young and they have a hard time controlling their hands as they make thin lines in their work, we use a toothpick instead of a paintbrush to trace our lines with ink on our paper. Once students are done tracing, they color their mandala with watercolors.
